Losing weight is one of the most difficult things to do. We see many patients who have lost a significant amount of weight through diet and exercise or from bariatric surgery. While it is a great accomplishment to have lost the weight, one of the unfortunate side effects is that the skin doesn’t have enough elasticity to shrink and fit your new body. No amount of exercise can help the loose skin, clothes don’t fit well and for many, it feels like the job is unfinished. Skin removal after weight loss can help reflect the new body image you’ve worked hard to achieve.
There are many procedures that can be done after weight loss to help a patient tighten their skin and feel better about their new body. During your consultation, we will discuss what bothers you most and create a customized treatment plan that helps you reach your goals. We will talk about the various options, but also things that can’t be improved. These body contouring procedures can include a circumferential body lift, thigh lift, arm lift and breast lift, among other procedures.
We can combine different procedures during one surgery to minimize both cost and recovery times. If you’re interested in scheduling a consultation with Dr. Rockmore to discuss body lift procedures, call us or complete the form below.
A circumferential body lift is like a tummy tuck that goes all the way around your body. For some people, the skin laxity is limited to the stomach area, and a tummy tuck may be the best option. However for most, the skin laxity extends around your torso. A circumferential body lift will remove this excess skin while also lifting the flank, lateral thigh and buttock. If there is significant laxity horizontally as well as vertically, the lift can be modified by the addition of a central vertical removal of skin. The circumferential body lift creates a dramatic effect on your body, and goes a long way to making you feel like yourself.
Breasts can drastically change after weight loss. As they lose volume, they deflate and sag. In this procedure, excess skin can be removed and tightened for lifted and reshaped breasts. A breast lift reshapes and repositions the breasts back on your chest. Often times volume needs to be restored as well, which is most commonly done with an implant. If limited volume is n
Also known as a brachioplasty, arm lift procedures remove the excess skin and fat that hangs from your arm pit area to your elbow. This procedure will help to make arms look more toned and tight. Incisions will depend on the amount and location of the excess skin, but are commonly on the inside of the arm.
A medial thigh lift removes excess skin and fat on the inner thigh from the groin area to the knee. There are different types of thigh lifts that can be performed based on the amount of loose skin and the extent. While the circumferential body lift tightens and lifts the lateral thigh, it doesn’t help the medial thigh or correct the laxity of the thigh circumference. During your consultation, we will discuss your specific needs and how we can best improve the size and shape of your legs.
While dramatic changes will be visible almost immediately, results may take 6 weeks to 6 months to see the final outcome. These procedures are performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient facility so you can go home the same day and recover comfortably at home. During the consultation, we will give you an accurate description of what is involved in your recovery, including the amount of discomfort. Some people may want just one area treated, while others need all 4 areas contoured. In this instance we typically combine procedures to accomplish everything in 2 stages. There are a variety of combinations, and we will discuss what we think will work best for you. We recommend renting a recliner if you do not have one at home. Depending on your job requirements, most patients take off about 2 weeks from work and return to normal activities after 6 weeks.
