When It's Time for Something New

Breast implants are not designed to last forever, and many patients eventually find that their implants have aged, developed a complication, or simply no longer reflect what they want their results to look like. Exchanging them for a new set is a common, straightforward solution. Dr. Jeffrey Rockmore performs breast implant exchange in Latham, NY. Rockmore Plastic Surgery helps patients from Troy, Saratoga Springs, and throughout the Capital Region update their results safely and confidently.

Reasons Patients Exchange Their Implants

Some patients exchange implants because they have reached the general 15-year mark, often discussed as a point to reevaluate them, even without any specific problem. Others do so because of a rupture, capsular contracture, or shifting that has changed how the implant looks or feels.

Just as often, patients simply want a different size, shape, or material than what they originally chose, whether their body has changed over the years, their lifestyle has shifted, or their aesthetic preferences have evolved since their first surgery.

Why Choose Rockwell Plastic Surgery?

Implant exchange requires a surgeon who understands not just how to place a new implant, but how the existing pocket, scar tissue, and skin have changed since the original surgery took place, along with how your goals may have shifted since then. Dr. Rockmore has performed thousands of breast procedures over more than 25 years in practice.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Patients throughout Latham, Albany, Clifton Park, and the Capital Region return to him years, sometimes decades, after their original surgery, confident in his continued care and attention to detail.

The Exchange Process, Step by Step

1. Evaluating the Existing Implant Pocket

Dr. Rockmore begins by examining your current implant, the surrounding scar tissue, and your skin quality to determine whether the existing pocket can be reused or needs to be adjusted for the new implant you and Dr. Rockmore have chosen together.

2. Addressing Capsular Contracture

If scar tissue has tightened around the implant, causing firmness or distortion, Dr. Rockmore may perform a capsulectomy to remove that tissue before placing the new implant, helping the results feel and look more natural once healing is fully complete.

3. Anesthesia and Setting

Breast implant exchange is typically performed under general anesthesia at an accredited outpatient surgical center. Surgery time is often shorter than the original augmentation, though it varies depending on whether a capsulectomy is needed, and most patients still go home the same day.

Is Breast Implant Exchange Right for You?

Implant exchange is worth considering any time your current implants no longer serve you well, whether due to age, complications, or a change in preference over the years. Good candidates typically:

  • Have had implants for 10 or more years without a recent evaluation
  • Have noticed firmness, asymmetry, or changes in how their implants look or feel
  • Want a different size, shape, or material than what they currently have

During your consultation, Dr. Rockmore will examine your existing implants and surrounding tissue to recommend the safest, most effective path forward for your specific goals, comfort, and situation overall.

What Recovery Looks Like This Time

Recovery from breast implant exchange in Latham is often more comfortable than the original augmentation, since your body has already adjusted to having an implant in place. Expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness for the first one to two weeks, along with a supportive bra worn during that time to help everything settle into place comfortably.

If a capsulectomy is performed, recovery may take a bit longer, closer to two to three weeks, before returning to typical activities. Most patients resume exercise after about four to six weeks, once Dr. Rockmore confirms you are fully ready to do so.

Enjoying Your Refreshed Results

Once swelling resolves, typically within a few weeks, you will see your updated results take shape, whether that means a different size, a firmer feel, or simply newer implants you can trust going forward, without the uncertainty of an aging or damaged implant.

If your implants are due for a refresh, Dr. Rockmore welcomes the chance to discuss your options. Schedule a consultation at his Latham office to get started whenever you're ready.

Frequently Asked Questions Breast Implant Exchange

How do I know if my implants need to be exchanged?

Signs may include firmness, visible changes in shape, discomfort, or simply reaching an age where evaluation is recommended. Dr. Rockmore can assess your implants during a consultation.

Can I change the size of my implants during an exchange?

Yes, implant exchange is a common opportunity to go larger, smaller, or simply choose a different shape or material better suited to your current goals.

Is implant exchange covered by insurance?

It depends on the reason. Exchanges related to a ruptured implant or a documented complication may be covered, while exchanges for personal preference are generally considered cosmetic.

Will the new implants look and feel different from my current ones?

They can, especially if you choose a different size or material. Dr. Rockmore will walk you through what to expect based on the specific implants you select together.

How long will my new implants last?

Like the originals, new implants are not designed to last a lifetime. Many patients go on to enjoy their exchanged implants for another decade or more.
