When patients ask about the best dermal filler brands, I like to clarify that the “best” filler isn’t a brand name; it’s the one that’s right for your face, anatomy, and specific concerns. After more than 25 years as a board-certified plastic surgeon in the Albany area offering injectable fillers, I’ve learned that product selection is only part of the equation. It’s the personalized plan behind the treatment that truly separates a natural-looking result from one that looks overdone or out of place.

What Are the Different Types of Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers fall into two main categories: soft-tissue fillers and volumizers, each serving a unique purpose:
- Soft-tissue fillers work beneath individual lines, folds, and creases to smooth the skin’s surface. Think of a wrinkle as a valley; the filler raises the floor of that valley to make it less visible.
- Volumizers address the deeper structural changes that come with aging, such as the loss of volume in the cheeks and upper face, which can give a drawn, hollow appearance.
At Rockmore Plastic Surgery, understanding this distinction is the starting point for every filler consultation. If we treat volume loss with a soft-tissue filler alone, we’re addressing the symptom without correcting the cause. Knowing how different products work and how long fillers last is essential to building a plan that holds up over time.
Which Dermal Filler Brand Is Best for Each Area of the Face?
The right brand depends heavily on the treatment area, the depth of placement, and the type of correction needed. My practice offers several leading filler options, each chosen because it performs well for specific concerns:
JUVÉDERM®
This popular hyaluronic acid (HA) filler has a gel formulation that delivers soft, natural-looking improvements to smile lines and similar creases. It’s also one of my go-to options for lip augmentation, enhancing volume, improving symmetry, and smoothing fine lines around the mouth. If you’re new to lip fillers or prefer a fresh start after treatment, it’s worth knowing that hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers can be dissolved if your preferences change.
The JUVÉDERM family also includes JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, which I use specifically for cheek and cheekbone restoration. VOLUMA recreates the natural arc of a youthful cheek and can last up to two years. JUVÉDERM filler typically lasts 9 to 12 months.
RADIESSE®
RADIESSE is unique in that it uses calcium microspheres in a gel base rather than hyaluronic acid. It’s particularly effective for deeper structural support along the jawline and nasal area. RADIESSE is also the only FDA-approved filler for volume loss in the backs of the hands. Results typically last 9 to 12 months.
BELOTERO BALANCE®
This HA filler is placed more superficially than other fillers, making it ideal for delicate areas like fine lines around the eyes and lips, where other products would be too heavy. BELOTERO usually lasts about 6 months.
Sculptra®
This filler works differently from all of the above. As a poly-L-lactic acid volumizer, it stimulates your body to gradually produce its own tissue over 6+ weeks. I often use it for cheek and temple restoration when patients want gradual, long-lasting results that can extend beyond 2 years.
While technically not a dermal filler, I also offer KYBELLA®. This injectable targets submental fat, or a “double chin,” as a nonsurgical alternative to a neck lift or neck liposuction.
Should I Choose Dermal Fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The answer often isn’t either/or. Fillers restore volume and smooth static lines, while BOTOX addresses dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and the “11s” between the brows. Understanding the difference between dermal fillers and BOTOX can help you make a more informed decision about your treatment. In many cases, combining both as part of a “liquid facelift” produces the most comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
How Does Dr. Rockmore Determine the Right Filler Plan for You?
My approach to filler treatment is grounded in the same comprehensive facial assessment I apply to surgical planning. I don’t just look at your face as a static image. Instead, I consider:
- Natural facial expression and movement.
- The degree of facial aging.
- How many enhancements will complement your overall appearance over time.
My team and I evaluate your bone structure, soft-tissue distribution, and specific concerns before recommending a particular product or a combined approach. Our familiarity with a wide range of filler products—from hyaluronic acid gels to biostimulators like Sculptra—means we’re not limited to one-size-fits-all treatment. We select the technique and tools best suited to your anatomy and goals.
